I finally made a poster for my radio show… for the last show of the semester haha!! O well, I think it turned out pretty good and hopefully so does the show tomorrow. If you’re near a computer or your phone at all from 9-11 tomorrow tune into Chapman Radio Online to hear me jabber about my bad taste (or good taste if you share my ear) in music.

ANNNNNNND now I’m going to contradict everything I just said becuase, I can’t lie, I think I enjoyed this one better. It made me smile, then it made me laugh really hard, then it made me want to post it… then I did. Not only does this video have Alex Florence in it (I secretly want to be her when I grow up ;), which I guess isn’t much of a secret anymore), it also includes the witty banter of one of my personal favorites, Chris Cote, AND it is set to the background music of Billy Joel.

If the Begin Again video and this guy were to get into hand to hand combat in a dark alley somewhere, my bets would be placed on this guy…just my opinion.

Much overdue on this blog of mine is a video of surfers actually surfing. Hell, much overdue in the world of surf media is a video of surfers actually surfing, and who better to present it to us than Mr. John Florence and friends.

Encompassing the awe inspiring talents of John John, Nathan and Ivan Florence, Kiron Jabour, Koa Rothman and Eli Olson, Blake Vincent Kueny goes back to basics with a 4 minute clip titled Begin Again that is worthy of all the surf media praise it generated last week. These boys charge harder than most people can ever dream to and even though John’s time on tour has garnered most of the attention, the company he keeps is just as, if not better than him and they deserve an equal amount of the praise being dealt.

Are my words sounding a little over passionate and cliche? Yea, well, my brain is a little jumbled from all the shredding that just took place on screen and I am collecting myself as I write this post. Watch for yourself above and if you’re brain is still in tact enough to read a few words, check out Surfer Mag’s “tell it like it is” opinion piece on the video. I dug it and you might too.

You know those parties that you get all dressed up for, but try not to look dressed up for? The ones where you say to your friends “this is going to be such a scene” and you secretly hope it is. You know, those ones where ALL the hot surfers are there and you’re so happy that you know Dane Reynolds is behind Marine Layer Productions, but also wish you knew what an air reverse is?

It seems as though lately the precursor to a number of my posts have been “I don’t usually like (insert the thing I don’t like to do here)”, and guess what, I’m going to do it again.

I don’t usually like Q & A interviews because they are dry, uninventive, repetitive, not creative and BOOOOORINGGG, but sometimes, just sometimes, a Q & A frames a person’s personality and makes for an interesting read. Such is the case with Noah Wegrich’s interview in the latest issue of Surfing Magazine. Like I mentioned in my thoughts on Maui’s Ian Walsh, this 19 year old new kid on the block from Santa Cruz has a charisma that punches through the boring overused questions that I’ve read a bagillion times in surfing magazines and makes me interested (or in modern terms, makes me want to search him on Instagram, an attainable goal given the information in the Q & A).

In 26 questions I don’t necessarily feel like I know the kid inside and out (who in fact is my age, I’ve got to stop saying kid), but I feel that if I ever encounter him at a party, on a table, dancing with his shirt off, and a tie around his head, I would know what to do. Just read the interview and you’ll get what I’m saying.

I don’t like facebook status’s, I don’t have a twitter, and I don’t like to draw the short circuited, instant gratifying nature of a quick status to my drawn-out tumblr platform, buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut… Rolling Stones tickets went on sale at 10 AM today and I just HAD to comment on the $730 price tag hanging from those babys. O no, sorry I am mistaken, they’ve gone down… what a relief… TO $630!!! HAHAH this isn’t a joke because, let’s face it, it’s the fucking Rolling Stones and I WISH I COULD GO! However with the red $2.53 flashing in my bank account right now (big spender, I know) and multiple failed attempts to save up for Outside Lands and my upcoming Mexico trip, is this a real and attainable aspiration?…… I thi-hink not.

A girl can dream though, can’t she?

This week I would like to give thanks to any veteran of war, but particularly those facing the direct consequences of the War in Iraq that we, as a nation, are still facing today. The casualties of this war span far beyond the disturbingly brutal, disturbingly unnecessary and disturbingly numerous mental and physical wounds of veterans to the wounds of veteran families and friends who have lost hope in a “normal” future because of the unnecessary rage of war.

I chose this subject after reading a letter posted on rollingstone.com by Thomas young, A dying Iraq War Veteran to George Bush and Dick Cheney in which he comments on the failures of the war and its carcinogenic affect on American people, Iraqi people and the world. 2 days after the September 11 terrorist attacks, Young enlisted in the army to defend the country that he loves, but was struck paralyzed after 4 days in battle and seeing the effects on thousands of men and women in America and Iraq, is extremely disappointed in something he once believed so much in.

His letter which contains powerful lines such as,

“[George Bush and Dick Cheney] were not willing to risk [themselves] for [their] nation, but [they] sent hundreds of thousands of young men and women to be sacrificed in a senseless war with no more thought than it takes to put out the garbage”,

is extremely powerful and is a piece of rhetoric that I think everybody needs to read. Personally, I chose to stay out of political discussions if possible and don’t usually read political jargon that festers on the internet, but I do believe in this letter and the ideas Young projects within it. This is because between the amount of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and suicides infecting the lives of veterans today (like decorated Marine Veteran Clay Hunt), my whole heart goes out to the men and women who have and who continue to sacrifice their lives, their families, and their futures for the well being of this country.

It’s an overused word, sacrifice, but it’s a word that can’t be replaced, can’t be accentuated enough, and can’t be easily expressed. In Young’s eyes, Bush and Cheney stole his future (“You may evade justice but in our eyes you are each guilty of egregious war crimes, of plunder and, finally, of murder, including the murder of thousands of young Americans – my fellow veterans – whose future you stole”) and that is the largest sacrifice I believe I will hear about in my generation; as many say, war is like Hell on Earth.

Their sacrifice is one I am extremely grateful for, but that I fear I won’t ever be able to repay. So, I vow to offer all of my respect to a veteran whenever he or she may be present before me. To pay for their breakfast/lunch/dinner when I sit honorably next to them in a restaurant. To lead the applause at the airport when they walk off the plane. And to always be thankful for what they have done, even if I will never fully recognize the magnitude of their grace.

Thank you to every and all veterans around the world. You deserve the best and I hope that someday you get it.

I love my friends… and that’s enough.

I’ve spent the last hour and a half, catching up or planning to catch up with friends which, two years ago, I thought I might have never talked to after graduation. I keep in contact because I love them and I love them because they’ve made the effort to keep in contact with me.

I love my firends… because they’re uplifting.

I’m always cool in their eyes, don’t need to be anything I”m not. They influence me to post things on this here Tumblr strictly about them because they’ve made my day with the simple Facebook comment or green heart imoji sent to my phone. They’re the ones who actively look at my tumblr and care about what I have to say, even when it’s just an overemotional rant like this one.

I love my friends… becasue they love me back.

And I know that these people are going to be in my life for a long time.
